Micromobility

Transportation Services and HUPD recognize the importance of a safe and efficient system of multi-modal connectivity to support the vibrancy and operations of the campus. These micromobility guidelines are designed to encourage equity, mobility, and access for all users.

Micromobility devices refer to electric scooters, skateboards, uniwheels, kick scooters, and similar wheeled vehicles. This does not include wheelchairs, mobility aids, and other power-driven mobility devices for the purposes of this policy.

Micromobility Guidelines

Parking and Storage

  • Keep Paths Clear: Parked micromobility devices must not obstruct accessible pathways, building entrances/exits, driveways, fire safety equipment, or emergency egress paths, and must be parked upright.  
  • No Charging Shared Devices: Shared micromobility devices, such as Lime or Bird scooters, may not be charged on Harvard property including inside Harvard owned or operated buildings.  
  • School/Building Guidelines: Please refer to guidelines established by your department or building manager regarding scooter parking, charging, or overnight storage.

Operations

  • ­­Aligns with Bicycle Traffic: Micromobility devices may only be operated in areas where bicycle traffic is allowed, may only travel in the direction of bicycle traffic, and must follow all vehicular rules and regulations. 
  • Respect Pedestrian Areas: Micromobility devices must be walked or carried on campus pathways and through dismount zones including Harvard Yard. 
  • Outdoor Use Only: Micromobility devices may not be operated inside buildings.

Safety

  • Obey Traffic Laws: Micromobility users must obey all applicable state and local traffic laws and regulations
  • Wear a Helmet: Helmet use is strongly encouraged while operating micromobility devices. 
  • Yield to Others: Micromobility operations must yield to persons with disabilities, pedestrians, and bicyclists. 
  • Substance-Free Riding: Micromobility device shall not be operated while under the influence of intoxicants.
  • Ride Responsibly: Be aware of your surroundings as you may not be seen or heard by other road users.
  • Charge Safely: Review Environmental Health and Safety Guidelines before buying or charging a micromobility device.
